About
Our Story: Mariana Vargas, a high school student at BCHS, founded For a Better Future USA with a vision rooted in personal experience and a deep commitment to service. Supported by her family, Mariana’s leadership is the driving force behind uplifting youth who often go unheard.
Our Mission Statement: To empower foster youth and underserved children by providing access to programs that nurture their academic, emotional, and personal development.
The Problem We Solve:
Education: Nationally, only 50% of foster youth graduate from high school.
Local Impact: In Kern County, over 6,000 students experience homelessness, many of whom are in foster care.
The Goal: Only 3% of foster youth earn a college degree by age 26; we are here to change those odds.
Our Model & Programs
A Sustainable Cycle of Opportunity
How it Works:
Business Partnership: We partner with local businesses to offer initial one-year scholarships for programs like coding, sports, and wellness.
Continued Support: After the first year, our nonprofit assumes the cost of continued enrollment through sponsorships, allowing new students to enter the program each year.
Key Features:
Expert Selection: A committee of educators and business leaders ensures scholarships reach those most in need.
Accountability: We use a feedback system to monitor student growth and progress.
